Program Description

This program is no longer being offered in 2012..

The Business Pathways Program is an enabling program that provides a pathway into ASB undergraduate programs for indigenous students, or for local students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. It is aimed at highly motivated students who demonstrate that they have the commitment and motivation to succeed, but are not yet adequately prepared for entry into the first year of study in the undergraduate programs of the ASB. The academic focus of the program addresses the fundamentals of a business program, including preparatory study in the areas of Mathematics, Accounting, and Economics; introduction to formal courses in Managing Organisations and People and Marketing; as well as skills development in academic literacy, communication, and independent learning.

On successful completion of the program, students will receive some academic credit for work completed in the Business Pathways Program and will be offered entry to mainstream degree programs at UNSW.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

By undertaking the Business Pathways Program students will have the opportunity to:
  • strengthen their academic literacy and communication skills;
  • learn the required mathematical skills for business degrees;
  • develop their critical and analytical thinking;
  • complete introductory courses in the business field
  • adjust to university study with a strong support structure.

Program Structure

Students must complete a total of 48units of credit (UOC) in the following courses:

Semester One:
or
  • Maths Skills 1 (6 UOC)
  • Economics 1 (3 UOC)
  • Accounting 1 (3 UOC)

Semester Two:
or
  • Maths Skills 2 (6UOC)
  • Economics 2 (3UOC)
  • Accounting 2 (3UOC)

Academic Rules

Students must complete 48UOC in the stated courses.

Students must complete the Program within two sessions of study.

Students who achieve a credit average (weighted average mark of 65% and above) over the whole program, may transfer to a Bachelor of Commerce, or another ASB undergraduate program, via the Internal Program Transfer process, provided they satisfy the requirements of that program.

Students will be eligible for advanced standing if they successfully complete the two credit bearing courses that form part of the BPP program.

Note: Student enrolments will be Commonwealth-funded and students will not have to pay Commonwealth Support charges.

Educational achievements required for entry into the program, and the general policy to be applied on advanced standing, will be consistent with any UNSW policy on pathways programs.

Exemption or substitution will be approved by a program authority only where a student is not required to undertake a course already completed as part of another award. However, students are required to complete the same number of units of credit in another course(s) as determined by the program authority.

Articulation Rules
The program provides for articulation to the Australian School of Business undergraduate programs.

On successful completion of the pathways program, students will be eligible for some advanced standing in completed courses that form part of their subsequent ASB degree program. As per admission to UNSW programs offered through Nura Gili and the Access Scheme, students will be offered entry into the Business Pathways Program with the approval of the Director of Nura Gili (in the case the Indigenous Stream students), and the Associate Dean Education or Associate Dean Undergraduate of the ASB, or their nominees (in the case the General Stream students).

A student who completes the pathways program but does not wish to proceed to a degree program, or does not obtain the required entry standard, will be provided with a Certificate of Achievement, certifying completion of the pathways program.

Academic Standing
Students who complete the BPP and progress to an approved ASB undergraduate degree program will be eligible for advanced standing (transfer credit) in successfully completed credit bearing courses that form part of that program, (i.e. MGMT1001 Managing organisations and People, and MARK1012 Marketing Fundamentals).
