Program Description
From Semester 1 2013, Actuarial Studies will no longer be offered as a major in the Bachelor of Commerce program. This can now be studied within the new Bachelor of Actuarial Studies program.
This 4 year dual program leads to the award of a Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Information Systems (BCom/BIS) and will meet the needs of students who want a strong, focused and highly regarded business degree combined with an Information Systems degree. As part of the degree program students will complete a major stream in both Information Systems (IS) and an approved disciplinary stream within the Australian School of Business.
After gaining approval, students with an appropriate academic record may also enrol in an additional Honours year in the relevant program offered in either the Commerce or IS.
In selecting their combination of majors, students should note that while there is a wide range of choice, not every combination may be able to be completed in 4 years of full-time study. Students are also not able to take a modern language as their major.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes
The objective of the BCom is to develop students’:
- Understanding of institutional structures and processes supporting global commerce
- Disciplinary skills and perspectives relevant to global commerce
- Professional competences and ethical perspectives relevant to practice in global contexts Understandings of alternative ways in which knowledge can be created and effectively deployed
- Understanding of the Australian School of Business graduate attributes, and the importance of: social perspective, professional skills, problem solving, oral and written communication, leadership and teamwork.
The objective of the BIS is to develop students’:
- Professional competence in the use and application of IS and Information Technology (IT) in a commercial environment
- Understanding of the business implications of IS and IT systems
- Competence in the management of IS and IT systems.
Program Structure
Studies leading to the award of the Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Information Systems degree normally consists of 192 UOC or 32 courses to be completed over 4 academic years.

Compulsory Core Courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses):
And ONE of:

- ECON1102 Macroeconomics 1 (6 UOC)
- FINS1613 Business Finance (6 UOC)
- LEGT1710 Business and the Law (6 UOC)
- MARK1012 Marketing Fundamentals (6 UOC)
Major Requirement
Students must complete at least 72 UOC (12 courses) in the Bachelor of Information Systems. This 72 UOC includes INFS1602. A full list of INFS core and elective courses is provided at program plan page.
Students must also complete a single major of 48 UOC (8 courses) in an approved Australian School of Business disciplinary stream (except Information Systems), which includes 42 UOC and 6 UOC from the core requirements. Students should refer to the Bachelor of Commerce program for further information.
Free Electives
24 UOC – 30 UOC, depending on choice of Commerce major. These courses are to be taken from within the Australian School of Business in order to fulfil the requirement for this dual program of 180 UOC in Information System and Business courses. Students may wish to use these UOC to complete a minor (30UOC) in an approved Business stream.

General Education Requirements
Students in this program must complete 12 UOC in General Education courses. General education courses must be taken outside the Australian School of Business. These courses allow you to select either courses that were developed especially for the General Education Program (beginning with GEN) or to choose mainstream courses that are offered in the degree programs of other UNSW faculties.
