Program Description

The Bachelor of Art Education [BArtEd] offers students in-depth study of art education and specialist fine art studies and prepares students for careers in visual art and design education in school settings, and in other areas such as museums and galleries, community organisations, as a curriculum development officer, designer, artist, art and design historian/theorist/critic.

The program incorporates flexibility in structure in order that students may develop their individual potential as future art educators in a variety of roles.

Professional experience placements are undertaken in primary and secondary schools, and other educational, community, cultural and industry based settings, including a full semester Professional Experience Internship.

The BArtEd has a depth component and a breadth component.

The Depth component is:
  • Art Education core (96 UOC)
  • Fine Art Studio core (48 UOC)
The Breadth component is:
  • Two Prescribed Electives (12 UOC)
  • Free Electives (24 UOC - 4 courses) which can be taken either within or outside COFA
  • General Education (12 UOC - 2 courses) which must be taken outside COFA

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

Secondary art teachers are required to fulfil many and varied responsibilities. This program prepares students to function as a visual arts and design teacher in secondary schools, primary schools, community organisations, art museums and galleries, as a curriculum development officer, designer, artist, art and design historian/theorist/critic. The opportunity exists within the course for students to focus on any of these roles.

NOTE:

English language proficiency requirements:

Proficiency in English is essential in all Education courses. Prospective teachers must be able to communicate effectively with school students and staff members. It is expected that all applicants will have one of the following:
  • Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in Standard English OR
  • Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in English as a Second Language OR
  • Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in Advanced English OR
  • IELTS score of 7.5, with a minimum of 8.0 in speaking and listening and a minimum of 7.0 in reading and writing. Students who have not met these requirements should speak to the School of Art History & Art Education.

Program Structure

The Foundation Year
All students complete foundation courses in art education (including school field experiences), fine arts and art history and theory. These courses provide a core, foundational experience. In subsequent years students develop plans emphasising their interests in the practices of art education and fine arts and design, contextualised through courses in their art education major including professional experience.

Art Education
Courses in art education provide students with investigations and applications of the theoretical and practical knowledge of the art educator. These compulsory courses include fieldwork and professional experience in a range of educational, cultural, community and industry contexts and the Professional Experience Internship.

Fine Arts
Courses in fine arts include:painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, installation and performance, jewellery, ceramics, textiles, cross media arts, video, sound and image. Students may plan sequences of courses in the fine arts as a major (at least 24 units of credit). In completing a Fine Arts major, students may choose courses offered as electives or core in the Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Art History and Theory
Students complete SAHT1101 Narratives of Modernity and SAHT1102 Beyond Modernities in their foundation year, and may take other courses as part of their electives.

Electives
Electives allow students to plan their studies to develop specific needs, interests and career aspirations. Students are encouraged to take at least one art education elective. Some students may choose electives to focus and deepen their studies, others will choose electives across a broad range of art education, design, digital media, art history and theory courses. Electives may be taken as courses offered by other faculties of the university.

Honours

Honours is awarded on the basis of meritorious performance across the whole program, and performance in SAED4051 Practices of Research in Art, Design and Education. Students will be considered for the award of honours according to the following scale:
  • Honours Class 1: If WAM greater than or equal to 75.0 and SAED4051 mark greater than or equal to 85
  • Honours Class 2 Division 1: else WAM greater than or equal to 75.0 and SAED4051 mark greater than or equal to 75
  • Honours Class 2 Division 2: else WAM greater than or equal to 75.0 and SAED4051 mark greater than or equal to 65

Academic Rules

  • enrol in the Bachelor of Art Education and complete 192 units of credit;
  • complete the requirements for the Art Education Core (96UOC)
  • complete the requirements for the Fine Art (Studio) Core (48 UOC)
  • complete 12 UOC in Prescribed Electives
  • complete 24 UOC of Free Electives
  • complete 12 UOC of General Education
  • complete at least 30 UOC of Level I courses before enrolling in Level II or Level III courses
