Program Description

The Bachelor of Design (Hons)/Bachelor of Art Education (BDes (Hons)/BArtEd) is a 5½ year dual award program that aims to prepare students as visual arts and design educators, and design professionals. The Bachelor of Design (Hons)/Bachelor of Art Education comprises courses in design, art and design education, including design history, theory and aesthetics, electives and General Education courses. The philosophy informing the program anticipates the notion of the designer/artist-teacher. A strong studio and historical focus is combined each session with art/design educational courses, to enable students to function in a cross-disciplinary way. Educational concepts, skills and values are studied within the context of the practice-based disciplines of an art/design/media school.

This Dual Award has been taught in COFA for over 10 years and is accredited with the NSW Institute of Teachers (NSWIT) and accredits students to teach Visual Arts and Design and Technology in Secondary Schools. Graduates demonstrate proficiency in professional experience through sequenced hands-on teaching experience in NSW schools from Year One and throughout their university program.

The BDes (Hons) component provides students with the fundamentals of design and the opportunity to explore their interests in a wide range of design specialisations, including graphic design, media design, film, television production and post-production, illustration, publications, interiors, theatre, exhibitions, display, festivals, furnishings, ceramics, textiles, jewellery and product design.
The BArtEd component allows students to develop their individual potential as: Visual Arts Teachers in Secondary Schools, Technology and Applied Studies Teachers in Secondary Schools, Curriculum Development Officers, Museum & Gallery Public Programs and Education Officers, Arts Policy Advisors, Artists, Art Historians, Theorists and Critics, Primary Visual Arts Specialists, Special Education Contexts.

NOTE: English language proficiency requirements:

Proficiency in English is essential in all Education courses. Prospective teachers must be able to communicate effectively with school students and staff members. It is expected that all applicants will have one of the following:
  1. Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in Standard English OR
  2. Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in English as a Second Language OR
  3. Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in Advanced English OR
  4. IELTS score of 7.5, with a minimum of 8.0 in speaking and listening and a minimum of 7.0 in reading and writing. Students who have not met these requirements should speak to the School of Art History & Art Education.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

On successful completion of the BDes (Hons) component, students will have the ability to:
  • demonstrate a fundamental understanding of design, as a process and way of thinking, and apply that understanding in design problems
  • demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills, and function as innovative, creative and enterprising professionals
  • present complex design proposals in coherent written statements and oral presentations
  • demonstrate understanding of design issues in terms of sustainability and in a local or global context
  • demonstrate understanding of the principles of working collaboratively, and as professionals
On successful completion of the BArtEd component, students will have the ability to:
  • Effectively integrate studies in Design with studies in Art Education in the context of a art, design & media school;
  • Demonstrate leadership in the education profession through enterprising responses to solving problems in design and art education;
  • Demonstrate and apply deep understanding of specific discipline areas in design, and art and design education;
  • Understand and work within a wide range of teaching practices, curriculum development procedures and teamwork as related to the specialist area of art and design;
  • Communicate concepts and ideas in art and design using innovative digital technologies, information and teaching resources.

Program Structure

The Bachelor of Design (Hons)/Bachelor of Art Education consists of 126 UOC of Design courses and 120 UOC of Art Education courses,12 UOC of General Education and 6 UOC of electives.

Bachelor of Design (Hons) Component

Compulsory core courses account for 60UOC (8 courses)
  • SDES4105 Design Studio Project A (6UOC)
Design Studio Stream courses account for 48 UOC (8 courses). Students should choose two streams of four courses from the following studios:
  • Ceramics
  • Graphics Media
  • Jewellery
  • Object Design
  • Spatial Design
  • Textiles
Bachelor of Art Education Component

Art Education Core (84 UOC)
Art Education Professional Experience (24 UOC)

Honours

Students in the BDes Dual Award mode are awarded Honours on the basis of meritorious performance across the whole program, and performance in the Honours Research Project. Students will be considered for the award of honours according to the following scale, which includes the Marks from the all Major courses, weighted according to stage (later stages with a higher weighting), and results from the Honours research project.
  • Honours Class 1: If WAM greater than or equal to 75.0 and Honours Research Project mark greater than or equal to 85
  • Honours Class 2 Division 1: else WAM greater than or equal to 70.0 and Project mark greater than or equal to 75
  • Honours Class 2 Division 2: else WAM greater than or equal to 65.0 and Project mark greater than or equal to 65
  • Honours Class 3: else WAM greater than or equal to 50.0 and Project mark greater than or equal to 50
To qualify for the award of the Art Education degree with Honours, a Dual Award student must:
  1. achieve at least a Credit grade for SAED4051 Practices of Research in Art, Design and Education, and
  2. achieve an overall WAM of no less than 75
Students in the BArtEd Dual Award mode are awarded Honours on the basis of meritorious performance across the whole program, and performance in SAED4051 Practices of Research in Art, Design and Education. Students will be considered for the award of honours according to the following scale:
  • Honours Class 1: If WAM greater than or equal to 75.0 and SAED4051 mark greater than or equal to 85
  • Honours Class 2 Division 1: else WAM greater than or equal to 75.0 and SAED4051 mark greater than or equal to 75
  • Honours Class 2 Division 2: else WAM greater than or equal to 75.0 and SAED4051 mark greater than or equal to 65

Academic Rules

Contextual Studies courses account for 18 UOC (3 courses). Students undertake 2 History/Theory and 1 Seminar course
