Program Description

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) [BFA (Hons)] is the equivalent of four years full-time study, designed for those who wish to involve themselves as practitioners in the visual arts or related fields by providing rigorous and demanding studies at tertiary level from a wide range of approaches and disciplines within the visual arts. The BFA(Hons) offers students strong fundamentals combined with flexibility to explore various media through practice and experimentation, and undertake a significant research project and opportunities to engage with the arts world in their final year.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) aims to produce artists with advanced technical skills and the ability to work creatively and collaboratively across diverse media. Graduates are equipped to undertake research and experimentation in Fine Arts.

Fine Arts (Hons) graduates will have the skills to become exhibiting artists and to play important roles within the creative industries.

Program Structure

The BFA (Hons) consists of a Fine Arts core that provides a depth of engagement with Fine Art studies (144 UOC) and an Elective and General Education component (48UOC) that provides breadth of experience.

The program structure is:

Year 1

Students must complete the following core courses:
  • Fine Arts Studios (12UOC)
  • Fine Arts, Design or Media Studios (12UOC)

Year 4

Students must complete the following core courses:
  • SART4043 BFA Honours Studio Practice 1 (6 UOC)
  • SART4044 BFA Honours Studio Practice 2 (12 UOC)
  • Honours Seminar (12UOC)
  • Creative Work Integrated Learning (6UOC)
The breadth component of Year 4:
  • Electives (12 UOC)
Students can choose from the following COFA Studios:

Fine Arts
Cross-Media Arts, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture Installation & Performance or Textiles

Media Arts
Animation and Visual Effects or Video Sound Image

Design
Graphics Media, Object Design, Spatial Design, Jewellery or Ceramics

Honours

Students must complete a 48 UOC honours sequence at Stage 4. Progression to Stage 4 is subject to academic performance, and requires completion of a total of 144UOC and all the requirements of the first three years of the program, including, level I, major and general education requirements. Students are expected to have attained an overall WAM of 65 or higher to be eligible to continue to Honours.

Students will be considered for the award of honours according to the following scale, which includes the Marks from the all Fine Art Major stream courses, weighted according to stage (later stages with a higher weighting), and results from the Honours research project.
  1. Honours Class 1: If WAM greater than or equal to 75.0 and Honours Research Project mark greater than or equal to 85
  2. Honours Class 2 Division 1: else WAM greater than or equal to 70.0 and Project mark greater than or equal to 75
  3. Honours Class 2 Division 2: else WAM greater than or equal to 65.0 and Project mark greater than or equal to 65
Exit Strategies

Students who are ineligible to progress to Honours, will be required to transfer to the Bachelor of Fine Arts and graduate with the Bachelor of Fine Arts award at pass level. Students enrolled in the Fine Arts (Honours) program who wish to take out the Bachelor of Fine Arts award at pass level without proceeding to Honours, are required to transfer to the Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Academic Rules

Complete 192 UOC consisting of:
  • Fine Arts core (144UOC)
  • Electives (36UOC)
  • General Education (12UOC)
Complete at least 30 UOC of Level I courses before enrolling in Level II or Level III courses
