Program Description

This program is not available to international or Defence sponsored students.

The School of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT) and the School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences (PEMS) offer a dual degree program which qualifies students for two degrees after the equivalent of five years of successful full-time study leading to the award of the degrees Bachelor of Engineering (Elec) (Honours) and Bachelor of Science (BE (Elec) (Hons) BSc).
The School of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT) will administer the program. Students should seek advice from the relevant School Office in the first instance, or from Student Administrative Services, UNSW Canberra. All program study plans must be approved by the School of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT) and the School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences (PEMS).

Program Structure

With this dual degree program, students must successfully complete courses that total at least 240 units of credit:

The dual program structure requires the completion of the Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) (Honours) 144 UOC and Bachelor of Science 96 UOC.

The BE (Elec) (Hons) / BSc dual degree is only to be offered in the following Science disciplines:

• Computer Science; or
• Mathematics; or
• Physics

The program may be varied according to the rules governing elective selection, pre- and co-requisites and progression with the program. Subject to pre- and co-requisites and progression rules, students may take courses at any time during the program; it is the responsibility of each student to ensure that the rules governing award of the degree have been met and that the program of study in each semester of enrolment is feasible with regards to progression and timetabling.

General Education Requirements

Students must complete one General Education course which may be undertaken in either Stage 2, 3, 4 or 5.

Honours

Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) (Honours)

Award of Class of Honours

Honours Class 1: WAM of at least 80 and Thesis Mark of at least 65
Honours Class 2 Division 1: WAM of at least 75 and Thesis Mark of at least 65
Honours Class 2 Division 2: WAM of at least 65 and Thesis Mark of at least 65
(NOTE: First attempt counts. Honours WAM to be calculated to one decimal place.)

Bachelor of Science (Honours)

On the completion of the Bachelor of Science in Dual mode and 144 UOC overall students can apply for admission to do an Honours year in the Bachelor of Science (Honours). Entry to Honours requires at least a credit average (min 65) across the entire undergraduate program including a credit average over the Level III courses in a major sequence which is in the same discipline area as the proposed Honours program.

Award of Class of Honours

At the completion of their Honours program students will be awarded an honours grading as follows:
Honours Class 1: WAM 85 or greater
Honours Class 2 Division 1: WAM 75 to 84
Honours Class 2 Division 2: WAM 65 to 74
Honours Class 3 or Pass: WAM 50 to 64

Academic Rules

To obtain the Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) (Honours) and the Bachelor of Science a student must successfully complete courses that total at least 240 units of credit and include courses making up at least 144 units of credit described for the BE (Elec) (Hons). Students must also complete 60 days of Practical Experience.

Progression

To ensure that all students who complete the program attain the honours level learning outcomes of the program, the progression rules for the program are as follows:

. No level 4 BE (Elec) (Hons) core courses until 102 UOC of BE (Elec) (Hons) core courses passed

. No level 3 BE (Elec) (Hons) core courses until all introductory core passed

If any of the conditions below apply, students will be transferred to the Bachelor of Engineering (Elec) (Honours) program, with such transfer subject to appeal:
. 2 fails in any given core course; or

. After half or more of the BE (Elec) (Hons) attempted (more than 84 UOC), 50% or more of BE (Elec) (Hons) core courses have been failed; or

. Prior to the final 48 UOC of the Elec specialisation a WAM of less than 50%.

Practical Experience Requirements

Before graduation a candidate shall complete 60 days of approved practical engineering experience which must be done in blocks of at least 20 working days each, each block being in the service of a single employer.

Award with Distinction

High achieving students who secure a WAM of 75 across their program and who have completed at least 48 UOC of their program at UNSW are eligible for the award of their Pass Degree "with Distinction".

Progression

The progression rules for the program are as follows:

. complete at least 30 UOC of Level 1 courses before enrolling in Level 2 courses
. specify your major at the time of enrolment into Level 2
. complete at least 24 UOC in your major before enrolling in Level 3 courses.

Award of the Degrees

A candidate for the award of the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering (Elec) (Honours) or Bachelor of Science as part of a dual degree program shall not be eligible to be awarded either degree until he or she has completed both degree requirements.
A student who completes the requirements for both the BE (Elec) (Hons) and BSc degrees shall receive at graduation a separate testamur for each of the degrees.
A student may apply to discontinue the dual degree BE (Elec) (Hons) / BSc programs and elect to complete the BE (Elec) (Hons) degree in accordance with the rules governing award of that degree. Transfer to the BSc degree is not possible as it is unavailable to civilian students. Following discontinuation from the dual program and transfer to the BE (Elec) (Hons) single degree, courses which count toward the dual program may not in general count toward the remaining single BE degree unless they meet the single degree requirements in their own right. In particular, the General Education requirements of the single degree must be met in full.

Administration of the dual program

A student's general program will be administered by the School of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT).

Students' programs will be administered by the School of Physical, Environmental and mathematical Science (PEMS) for the BSc component of the program and by of the School of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT) for the BE (Elec) (Hons) part of the program.

SEIT and PEMS shall jointly exercise authority in any matter concerning the dual degree program not otherwise covered by these rules.
