 Taxation

Description

At UNSW the discipline of taxation focuses on tax legislation, policies and practices. In recent times, taxation has undergone significant changes and there is a need for lawyers, accountants, economists and tax administrators with current and specific knowledge of the taxation system. Graduates are employed in leading law and accounting firms, corporations and government taxation, treasury and revenue offices.

Studying Taxation at UNSW

Taxation programs at UNSW are offered through Atax (www.atax.unsw.edu.au), the taxation school in the Faculty of Law. Atax currently offers one undergraduate and five postgraduate degree programs, as listed in the table below.
At the undergraduate level, students wishing to attain professional accounting accreditation can choose the accounting electives in the Bachelor of Taxation program. The degree is accredited by CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

Taxation can also be studied as a co-major within the Faculty of Commerce and Economics when enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics. Students who complete the Taxation co-major with an Accounting major will satisfy the requirements of the Institute of Chartered Accountants for admission to the CA program. They will also satisfy the requirements of the Tax Agents Registration Board. Experience suggests that students who have completed a Taxation co-major should be advantageously placed when undertaking the CPA program. Students with a qualification in Taxation and Accounting will be well placed to embark on careers as tax consultants.
Students who include taxation studies in their commerce degrees add value to their chosen specialisation in commerce. Students who undertake a co-major in Taxation will enhance job opportunities, and career paths, in an increasing range of professional, commercial and government sectors
