French Studies

Description

French is the traditional language of international diplomacy; it is one of the official working languages of the United Nations and many other international organisations. Our program will develop your cultural awareness through the study of French literature, linguistics, history, politics and society. Our graduates are equipped with French communication skills, and knowledge of the structure and function of this globally spoken European language.

What will you study

Our language programs cater for students of all levels, whether you have never studied languages before or have studied at an advanced level. Entry is flexible, which means that whatever your level of experience, you can study a language course suited to your skills.

You will be immersed in both the language and culture of your chosen tongue from day one. Beginner’s courses focus on language skills and grammar using a communicative approach that emphasises interaction. Courses at Intermediate, Advanced and Professional levels maintain and develop language skills while providing in-depth contextual knowledge through the study of pop culture, history, teaching, interpreting, translation, linguistics and literature.

If you have prior language knowledge you will need to take an online placement evaluation so that we can assess your skills and select an appropriate level of course for you. Information about the evaluation and additional course details can be found on the web at: hal.arts.unsw.edu.au
