Social Research and Policy

Description

The study of Social Research and Policy is focussed on providing students with skills in undertaking social research particularly in an applied policy setting. These include written communication skills with particular emphasis on reports, submissions, position papers and proposals; the ability to undertake research and data analysis, both quantitative and qualitative; analysis and critical evaluation of research and policies; and the use of Information and Communication Technologies including specialised computing packages in social research.

Special emphasis is placed on familiarising students with the ways in which social research is put into practice by using case studies drawn from current projects being undertaken or commissioned by government and non-government organisations.

Another major focus is the development of student's appreciation of contemporary social and public policy issues, an understanding of the processes of policy development and the development of skills with which to analyse and assess policy.
