Program Description

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management program contains a core sequence of compulsory courses, a choice of disciplinary Majors and choices from a group of Directed Electives. The Majors include: Biology, Earth Science, Ecology, Environmental Chemistry, Geography and Marine Science.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The aim of the program is to provide a strong education in the skills and knowledge necessary to work or carry out research as an environmental scientist. In addition to the graduate attributes applicable to 3970 Bachelor of Science, graduates of the BSc (EnvMgt) will need to be able to place their understanding of the scientific aspects of the environment within the general context of the policy and legal framework of environmental regulations, as well as economic and social dimensions to environmental policy and management.

The BSc (EnvMgt) is designed as a 3 year (full-time) program. There is also an opportunity for students to continue onto an Honours year in Program 4500 Science (Honours), if they satisfy the entry requirements (usually a Credit WAM), or to continue onto 8623 Masters of Environmental Management.

Program Structure

When completing the Bachelor of Science (Environmental Management) as a single degree, students must complete a minimum of 144 units of credit (UOC). This 144 UOC is comprised of an approved major, compulsory courses, directed electives, free electives and General Education as shown below:

120 UoC comprised of:

     • An approved Major (listed below); and
     • Compulsory courses (listed below); and
     • Directed Electives (listed below); and

24 UoC comprised of:

     • Free Electives (these courses can be taken from any Faculty of the university) ; and
     • General Education (this courses cannot be Science courses)

Total: 144 UOC

When a student studies the Bachelor of Science (Environmental Management) as part of a dual degree with another UNSW undergraduate degree program, they are required to complete a minimum of 120 units of credit comprised of an approved major, compulsory BSc (EnvMgt) courses and directed electives.

Sample Program

The Faculty of Science has created Undergraduate Program Guides to help students choose courses based on the requirements of their chosen major/s. The documents should be used as a guide only and in conjunction with the Academic Rules outlined above. To access the Program Guide for your major visit www.science.unsw.edu.au/current-students/undergraduate-program-guides.

General Education Requirements

Students in this program must also satisfy the General Education requirements. This is 12 UOC, usually taken in second and third year studies, as indicated in the Program Structure. For further information, please refer to "General Education" in the Table of Contents (see left-hand side of page). Students in Environmental Science need to be aware that there are a number of General Education courses which they are excluded from taking. Please contact the BEES Student Office for details.

Academic Rules

1. A student must complete a minimum of 144 units of credit in Stages 1-3.

2. Students must complete a core set of courses in the BSc (EnvMgt) which totals 120 units of credit. This core must contain 60 units of credit from the compulsory course list plus one Approved Major and courses from the Directed Electives list such that the compulsory courses plus Approved Major plus Directed Electives totals 120 units of credit. The remainder of courses for the single degree are Free Electives (that may be taken from any Faculty of the university) and General Education.

3. If the same course exists in the compulsory course list, Approved Major or Directed Electives then students must complete additional Directed Electives such that the compulsory courses plus Approved Major plus Directed Electives totals 120 units of credit.

4. The 60 units of credit compulsory courses in the the BSc (EnvMgt) Program are listed in the Program Structure section above.

5. The Approved Majors in the BSc (EnvMgt) Program are:
6. The Approved Major must be declared before enrolling in level II courses. (Students do not need to declare a Major in their first year as they are encouraged to try a variety of level 1 Science courses to enable them to select an appropriate Major before commencing level II courses. Information on how to declare a Major can be found on the Science Student Centre website.) It is not possible to complete a 'double Major' in this Program: if students wish to attempt more than one Major they should consider Program 3970.

7. The Directed Electives in the BSc (EnvMgt) Program are:
*these Stage 3 courses require 24 UOC in the Environmental Humanities stream from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (or in the case of ARTS3241, in the Environmental Humanities or Development Studies streams).

Students may apply for additional courses to be considered for this list through the Science Student Centre. Courses will be considered by the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs) or nominee if they fulfil the objectives of the BSc (EnvMgt) Program.

8. No student may normally commence Level 2 courses until 24 units of credit Level I have been successfully completed unless approved by the Program Convener or Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs).

Fees

For information regarding fees for UNSW programs, please refer to the following website:  https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/fees/FeesMainPage.html

Award with Distinction

The Faculty of Science will award a Pass degree in the BSc (EnvMgt) with Distinction to students who obtain a minimum WAM of 75 across their Program and complete at least 72 UOC at UNSW. The designation "with Distinction" will not be issued to students who enrol in an Honours program.

University Medal

Nominees for the University Medal will be determined by Schools within the Faculty of Science in accordance with UNSW University Medal policies and procedures.

Pathways after Completion of the 3965 Program

Progression to Honours in Environmental Management is described in Program 4500 (BSc Honours). Entry to the BSc (Honours) Program is subject to academic performance and the number of places available in a School’s Honours program. Students typically require a minimum overall WAM of a Credit for entry into Honours, although due to the competitive nature of Honours in some Schools, the level of academic performance required may be higher. Where students achieve an overall WAM that is less than, but close to the entry requirements, Schools may consider academic performance in the major area of study. All decisions regarding entry to the BSc (Honours) are subject to the approval of the Program Authority.

Students seeking to enrol in Honours are required to have completed all the requirements for the BSc (EnvMgt) and satisfied all prerequisite requirements for Honours as specified by the relevant School. Students should check prerequisite requirements for Honours with the relevant School and consider potential projects and supervision as early as possible.

It is recommended that students who are granted admission into the BSc Honours Program delay their graduation from 3965 until after they complete Honours and so graduate with Bachelor of Science (Environmental Management) in [name of Major completed] and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in [name of Honours Plan completed].

The completion of Honours is a typical pathway for students who wish to undertake a postgraduate research qualification.

The BSc (EnvMgt) and Honours in Environmental Management also articulates with 8623 Masters of Environmental Management and the nested Graduate Diploma (Program 5499) and Graduate Certificate (Program 7339). Students who have completed the BSc (EnvMgt) may receive recognition of prior learning and some Advanced Standing in these postgraduate coursework programs.
