Description

This course is suited to students who would like to underpin their Juris Doctor studies with a broader, interdisciplinary understanding of how disputes arise, and how conflict can be contained and managed. It introduces students to models of communication and conflict analysis, and a range of skills for managing disputes in a constructive manner. Drawing on insights from fields such as psychology, management, political and social sciences, this course is oriented towards providing students with practical skills informed by theory.

Recommended Knowledge

Students are encouraged to complete Resolving Civil Disputes before enrolling in this course.

Course Aims

This course aims to provide students with a foundation in conflict management skills that they can apply immediately in their personal and professional lives. It introduces students to models of communication and conflict analysis, and a range of skills for managing disputes in a constructive manner. It aims to give students a grounding in the interdisciplinary basis of conflict resolution by providing insights from fields such as psychology, management, political and social sciences

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to:
  1. Understand conflict and conflict resolution models
  2. Undertake conflict analysis
  3. Articulate and apply the ethical dimensions of conflict analysis
  4. Demonstrate sound communication skills in conflict situations
  5. Understand psychological dimensions of conflict at a basic level
  6. Demonstrate effective written communication skills by articulating core concepts clearly, persuasively and appropriately
  7. Demonstrate effective oral communication skills by discussing and debating course concepts in a scholarly, reflective and respectful manner
