Program Description
The requirements of this program are for students commencing their studies in 2017. Continuing students can view their original program requirements in previous editions of the handbook.

The Master of Health Management is designed to meet the needs of health managers today and sets the benchmark for health services management training. The program is offered in two streams using scenarios tailored to either the Australian healthcare system or developing health care systems.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes
This program has been designed to provide students with the essential knowledge, skills and attributes required for senior managerial roles in health service delivery. A key focus of the program is promoting health leadership in areas of strategic planning, policy and decision-making. A strong emphasis is also placed on understanding and meeting the challenges of safety and quality within current and emerging health service contexts. The objective of the program is to develop judgment-ready practitioners who can impact on health service issues and systems.

Program Structure
The Master of Health Management is offered in full-time/part-time and internal/external modes. An optional residential week is held prior to the commencement of semester 1 and 2 each year.

The program comprises 48 units of credit (UOC) consisting of 30 UOC of core courses and 18 UOC of elective courses:

Core Courses
Electives

A large variety of electives are offered, enabling students to focus on areas of interest and professional relevance. Core courses from the Master of Public Health or Master of International Public Health programs can be taken as electives towards the Master of Health Management. In addition, students may enrol in health management electives which are offered by other schools and academic units within the University of New South Wales after seeking approval from the program coordinator.

Electives are also available from Arizona State University as part of the PLuS Alliance
* PHCM9498 Epidemiology and Statistics in Public Health is a pre-requisite course for PHCM9517 and PHCM9518.

Students may also apply to the Program Director to be allowed to replace up to 12 UOC of course electives with a 6 UOC Research Project, 6 UOC Independent Study or 6 UOC Internship.
Additional Course Requirement for International Students.

International Students who have not previously completed a degree in Australia and are enrolled in the full time program in Sydney (Kensington campus) are required to take the following additional course in their first semester.
This course is available for all students to assist them with academic literacy practice and includes critical reading, thinking and writing, oral communication and managing postgraduate study. The course is made available at no charge to students and does not contribute to the program requirements of the degree. Local students who have not studied recently are also welcome to enrol to assist them with the transition back to university and to assist them with their academic skills.

Academic Rules
The Master of Health Management (MHM) articulates with the Graduate Diploma in Health Management and the Graduate Certificate in Health Management (GradCert).

Admission Requirements
Applicants are required to have either:
  • An undergraduate degree in a field relevant to public health or health management (see list below)* and two years full-time professional or volunteer experience. This may also include equivalent professional experience acquired as part of a degree of 4 or more years duration (e.g. MBBS, MD)
OR
  • An undergraduate degree plus an honours or postgraduate degree in a field relevant to public health or health management (see list below)*
[*Examples include, but are not restricted to, medicine, nursing, allied health, health sciences, biomedical sciences, dentistry, social work, sociology, behavioural and social sciences, social work, psychology, marketing, human services, emergency services, environmental health, veterinary science, health administration, business, management, engineering, law, science, mathematics and statistics, economics, policy studies and development studies.]

Applications will be assessed in accordance with the UNSW Recognition of Prior Learning Policy and Procedure.
