Description

Students are allocated to a social welfare agency to undertake field-based learning under the supervision of an academic and qualified field educator. Practica occur in a range of traditional and contemporary settings and contexts, such as hospitals, local governments, state and federal government departments, as well as non-government, community based organisations. Performance is monitored and assessed by the University, in consultation with the field educator and student. This practicum begins in late-January with a five-week full-time block period, then reduces to three days a week during Session 1.

Learning Outcomes

Students are expected to take responsibility for their learning in both the classroom and agency components of the course. In particular by the end of the course students are expected to:
  • Undertake all allocated social work tasks in their practicum
  • Understand and respond to the needs and behaviour of people using social work knowledge, skills, and values
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how the organisation works
  • Display an understanding of the position and role of the organisation in the overall pattern of welfare provision
  • Develop their awareness of general policy issues relevant to the context of the organisation and student's own practice
  • Develop a clear understanding of the scope of social work and its relationship to other occupations
  • Develop professional relationships with organisation staff
  • Develop skills and systematic use of knowledge in the areas of assessment, goal setting, and intervention
  • Take responsibility and initiative in their learning
  • Realistically appraise their own practice and learning and recognise their own strengths, limitations, and individual practice style
  • Be aware of, and demonstrate differences between friendships and professional/working relationships
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the impact of their values, experiences, and personality on others.

Assessment

This course will be assessed as either satisfactory/unsatisfactory. For a satisfactory grade to be awarded various criteria must be met. For more details of assessment tasks, please refer to the course outline which is available from the School office.
