Program Description
The one-year Master of Education degree is designed for qualified teachers and other educational professionals who wish to study education at an advanced level. Commonwealth Supported Places (previously HECS) are available for local candidates.
The program is suitable for teachers, trainers in industry and commerce, adult educators and other professionals, but does not provide a qualification in pre-service education.
The program offers nine areas of specialisation: Educational Studies, Assessment and Evaluation, Educational Psychology, Gifted Education, Higher Education, Teacher Leadership, Special Education, TESOL and Visual Arts Education.

Program Learning Outcomes
At the end of the program, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the field of education as it relates to their specialist area of study, and the ability to synthesize and apply disciplinary principles and practices to new or complex environments.
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of research-based learning and the ability to plan, analyse, present implement and evaluate complex activities that contribute to advanced professional practice and/or intellectual scholarship in education
- Demonstrate advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Communicate effectively to a range of audiences, and be capable of independent and collaborative enquiry and team-based leadership
- Demonstrate an understanding of international perspectives relevant to the educational field
- Demonstrate an advanced capacity to recognise and negotiate the complex and often contested values and ethical practices that underlie education

Entry Requirements
A recognised Bachelor degree and a postgraduate teaching qualification (e.g. Graduate Diploma of Education or Master of Teaching)
OR
A four year pre-service teacher education qualification, including professional experience, equivalent to the qualifications required for Graduate teacher status in NSW.
OR
A four year pre-service teacher education qualification, including professional experience, equivalent to the qualifications required for Graduate teacher status in NSW.
Credit Transfer
If you are seeking credit transfer you must submit documentary evidence of courses completed at the time of initial enrolment. Faculty will then determine the number of units of credit to be granted. Credit transfer will not be granted for courses completed more than ten years previously. The maximum credit transfer for a Masters is 24 UOC (equivalent to four courses), and a Graduate Certificate is 12 UOC (equivalent to two courses).
Award with Excellence
You are eligible for the award of a degree "with Excellence" if you achieve a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 80 in all courses and complete at least 50% of the requirements of your award at UNSW.
Academic Rules
To qualify for the award of the degree, a student must:
- Enrol in the Master of Education
- Complete the 48 UOC of advanced disciplinary courses
